The global climate emergency necessitates immediate action.
“The world is in a state of climate emergency, and we need to shift into emergency gear.” — United Nations Environment Programme
What we do
The Fir Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting sustainable enterprise. Our purpose is to encourage individuals and small businesses in our local communities to pursue sustainable goals and start green projects. Founded by college students in Los Angeles, California, and Vancouver, British Columbia, we operate at the intersection of sustainability, business, and non-profit work.
We believe that to encourage meaningful progress in the climate transition, we must endeavor to lower the financial barriers to sustainable enterprise, particularly for small businesses and local communities. To that end, we strive to provide interest-free microloans for green initiatives, ranging from individuals seeking funding to install solar panels in their homes to businesses launching new and environmentally conscious products.
Our work involves assembling and leading a consortium of backers—comprising individual lenders, companies looking to lend to a sustainable cause, and other organizations—to jointly finance selected microloans. Practically, we accept loan applications through our website and across the internet, and we distribute our financing to selected proposals by making use of existing microfinance platforms such as Kiva, SoloFunds, and GoPeer.
